Personal profile

I am an Associate Professor, researcher and extensionist at the School of Agribusiness from the ‘Tecnológico de Costa Rica’. I have coordinated or participated in research and extension projects related to sustainable agri-food systems, value adding and agroindustry, circular bioeconomy and Life Cycle Thinking methods. I currently coordinate the Agroindustrial Management Research Centre (CIGA) and the Costa Rican Food Loss and Waste Reduction Network. I also participate in several academic networks, sectoral boards, and as graduate and postgraduate thesis evaluator.

Research Interests

My research and extension areas of interest focus on sustainable agri-food systems, food loss and waste reduction and environmental and social footprint assessment using a Life Cycle perspective (Life Cycle Assessment LCA and Social Life Cycle Assessment S-LCA).

Professional Experience

Academic experience   

Associate Professor of undergraduate and graduate programs at the Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), (2009-present).

Extensionist in projects related to the Costa Rican and Latin American agricultural sector, projects funded by TEC and other Costa Rican funding sources such as FITTACORI and FEES-CONARE. (2013-present)

Researcher in national and international projects related to agribusiness, sustainable food systems, product and market quality, food loss and waste, waste management, bioeconomy, and life cycle assessment, among others.  Funding sources from TEC, FITTACORI and external co-financing (2013-present). 

Coordinator of the Technical Committee of the Agroindustrial Management Research Centre of the School of Agribusiness, Tecnológico de Costa Rica (2022-to date)

Consultant for United Nations Agencies such as UNDP and FAO, and for ABA Inc.-USAID/USDA, on issues related to agri-food innovation, farmer's markets, food loss and waste, composting (2013, 2016, 2021, 2022). 

Participation in H2020 and PRIMA projects, such as REFRESH, FIT4REUSE and 4CEMED, as well as ADELANTE 2 and AL-Invest EU funds (2019-2025).

Others

Coordinator and consultant for FUNDATEC in several projects for SMEs (2010-present).

Member of the Delegation of Costa Rican Missions in FAO events such as the annual meeting of the World Committee on Food Security CFS43. 

Member of the Global Panel of Advisors for the elaboration of the International Code of Conduct for the Reduction and Prevention of Food Loss and Waste, led by FAO and approved by the COAG (2020-2021).

National Contact Point for Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, Cluster 6 (2018 to 2020 and 2021-to date respectively).

Coordinator of the Costa Rican Food Loss and Waste Reduction Network (2014-present).
