Research Interests

Carolina Centeno-Cerdas is a Costa Rican scientist and professor specializing in biotechnology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology Engineering from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with emphasis in Cellular Physiology from the University of Costa Rica (UCR), and a Doctoral degree in Experimental Medicine from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

She is a Full Tenure Professor at TEC’s School of Biology and a researcher at the Center for Research in Biotechnology (CIB), where she coordinates the Tissue Engineering Laboratory (Laintec). Her academic and research career spans more than two decades, focusing on clinical and preclinical studies in molecular diagnostics, bioactivity, regenerative therapies, and tissue engineering.

Currently, Dr. Centeno-Cerdas works on the development of more robust and ethical study models, such as organ-on-chip systems, and conducts bioactivity and biocompatibility testing to evaluate new biomedical applications. More recently, her research has expanded into the use of bioprinting techniques to design innovative solutions for tissue regeneration and personalized medicine.
