Personal profile

Research interests

Aníbal Ruiz-Barquero, Student Member, IEEE, obtained his Licentiate degree in Electronics Engineering and his M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (ITCR) in Cartago, Costa Rica. Between 2008 and 2018, he worked in industry with national and international companies, including Pipasa, GreenTech, Sensor Group C.R., Intel, and Emerson Electric Ltd. Since 2018, he has been a lecturer in the Electronics Engineering Department at ITCR.

He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at ITCR–DOCINADE (emphasis: Applied Electronic Technologies), developing intelligent IoT systems for water resource management and precision agriculture in Costa Rica. His doctoral research integrates two complementary lines: solar-powered atmospheric water harvesting (SPAWH) systems deployed in off-grid coastal areas, and smart precision irrigation systems. Both lines are supported by a five-layer fog-computing IoT architecture that minimizes cloud data transmission. Methodologically, his work combines machine-learning sensor calibration and Bayesian data assimilation, using a Particle Filter coupled with the Hydrus-1D Richards-equation solver to autocalibrate low-cost capacitive soil-moisture sensors against TDR references.

His research interests include automatic control, IoT and wireless sensor networks, fog and edge computing, low-cost sensor calibration, Bayesian data assimilation, soil–water dynamics modeling, machine learning for environmental sensing, and smart agriculture.
